Career Assessments
If you aren't sure where to begin, can't pinpoint your career interests, or feel like you have too many options - a career assessment could help. Keep in mind, there is no magic test that will just give you an answer, but we can work with you to reflect upon your results and discern a way to use the information to progress in your career development.
Appointment Required
The Rizzo Career Center offers two primary assessments, each with unique benefits. These are formal psychometric tests that require a certified practitioner to review and interpret the results with you. That means, your results come to us after you complete the questions and you must schedule an assessment debrief appointment in Handshake to receive them. Please read the descriptions below and SELECT ONE assessment as a starting point. They both take around 15-20 minutes to complete.
Strong Interest Inventory
This assessment looks at your career interests. You will rate a series of activities, but be sure to think of them in a vacuum, not assigning a career value or considering your abilities. The Strong is based on the theory of John Holland who set forth six categories of interests and you will learn which are your top two-three interest areas as well as corresponding careers. This is a good choice if you aren't sure how to translate your interests into a career or if you have lots of varied interests in many different areas. Generally, we suggested students start with the Strong. It does require you to select a gender - use what you identify with. If you identify as non-binary and prefer not to select one gender, the MBTI might be a better tool.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
The results of this assessment focus on identifying personality traits that might provide insight into the way you work and careers you might enjoy. You will be given a four letter code to describe your personality type and see a report of the careers that are most common for others with the same type. The report also provides some insight into your strengths as a worker and environments that might best suit your personality. This is a good choice if you can't pinpoint any interests or are looking for a more holistic approach on self-reflection that includes details about how you work with others.
